This One Fact Is Why Most Diets Don’t Work, According to Doctors

dietThink about it: If diets really worked, the diet industry as we know it wouldn’t exist. But the truth is that 45 million American people go on diets every year, and most of them fail to meet their goals. When diets don’t work, it’s actually possible to gain weight, rather than lose it. If you follow a fad diet that claims to help you drop a large amount of weight in a short amount of time, your body is tricked into thinking it is in a state of starvation and attempts to hang on to every calorie to survive.

According to Steven R. Hendrick, MD, it’s all down to leptin, a hormone made by fat cells in the body that decreases when you diet. “When the leptin levels decrease, the brain senses that more energy needs to be brought in. Feelings of hunger increase to initiate food intake in order to replenish the energy the body senses it needs,” explains Dr. Hendrick.

With new diets being marketed to us all the time, it’s not always easy to resist the promise of a quick fix. But a growing number of health professionals are advocating a very different solution to long-term weight loss.

It’s known as “intuitive eating,” and it’s more of a lifestyle approach or philosophy than a traditional diet approach. It requires listening to your body, and nourishing it appropriately, in the hope of avoiding yet another failed diet when your brain fights back against weight loss. (Check out what experts won’t tell you about weight loss.)

“Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of intuitive eating,” confirms Dr. Hendrick. “I would agree with respecting your fullness—eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re not. Eating to refuel versus eating when there’s food around is, I think, a very important distinction we should all consider.”

However, that doesn’t mean eating pizza for every meal because it’s normal for you, and no longer forbidden. It means paying more attention to your body’s fullness cues.

“For good health, you need to make good decisions,” says Dr. Hendrick. “You could just as easily still feel good about yourself with intuitive eating but very well be ‘unhealthy,’ in reality.”

If you’re thinking that intuitive eating requires hard work and willpower, you’re absolutely right. It requires making good food choices—and ignoring all the unhealthy options available to us everywhere we go, 24/7.

“If you truly followed the tenets being promoted by intuitive eating, I think you probably would drop some weight, and feel good both mentally and physically,” says Dr. Hendrick.

The Only Crash Diet to Consider If You Must Lose Weight Fast

Load up on non-starchy veggies

asparagusFace it, if you want to lose weight over the long haul, your best bet is to make sustainable, long-term lifestyle changes like the nine simple ones this woman made to shed 45 pounds and keep them off. But sometimes life comes at you fast and you need a fast solution. One smart lifestyle change is to eat plenty of veggies—especially for someone looking to lose weight. Vegetables are nutrient-packed and provide plenty of filling fiber with hardly any calories. Plus, non-starchy veggies have a high water content, so they hydrate you while filling you up—the perfect combination for weight loss.

Starchy veggies (like potatoes) and processed whole grains (like whole-wheat bread) are foods I’d normally recommend eating in moderation, since they provide plenty of nutrients, fiber, and healthy carbs. However, high-carb foods aren’t your best friend when you’re looking to drop water weight. Essentially, when your body stores excess carbs, it stores them with water. So replacing carb-heavy foods with non-starchy veggies that still provide filling fiber without as much water retention is the way to go. For a week before your event, you can swap out the starchy carbs for more non-starchy vegetables to lose some water weight. (These are 10 things experts wish you knew about water weight.)

Aim for filling at least half of your plate with non-starchy veggies like asparagus, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, spinach, kale, cucumbers, and more. This is a great idea for everyone’s health, not just people wanting to lose weight.

Having This One Trait Could Be the Secret to Having a Flatter Stomach

absGood news, dieters: Your days of calorie-counting and intense exercising are (practically) over. Sure, we don’t dispute the fact that healthy eating is one of the keys to flattening your belly. But what if we told you that you can bust belly fat without exercise or dieting? In fact, getting the six-pack you’ve always dreamed of could come down to one simple personality trait, research says.

According to a recent study, extremely mindful people—or those who stay in the moment and focus on one task at a time—have significantly less belly pooch than those who are less attentive.

The study, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, evaluated almost 400 male and female participants with an average age of 47. Researchers measured the participants’ body mass index and the amount of fat on their hips and stomachs, and then gave them a 15-question questionnaire to determine their score on a Mindful Attention Awareness Scale. Their overall mindfulness ranking was calculated by averaging those responses; a score of one indicated low levels of mindfulness, while a score of six indicating high levels of mindfulness. After controlling for other lifestyle variables, like age, sex, and smoking, the study authors compared the participants’ scores with their body fat and weight measurements.

Overall, those who scored higher on the Mindfulness Scale had less flab than their unmindful counterparts, the researchers reported. They believe that paying attention to the body’s responses while eating (and savoring each bite!) is the secret to their subjects’ slim waistlines. In addition to eating healthier foods, attentive people are also more likely to stop eating once they reach a comfortable level of fullness instead of mindlessly stuffing themselves. That helps them lose weight fast—and keep it off, too. Learn more about what mindful eaters do at every meal.

One important note, however: Although the results reveal a correlation between mindful eating and lower body fat, they don’t necessarily prove that one causes the other. According to the study authors, further research is necessary before we know how and why attentiveness could be such an effective weight loss tool. Until then, these ab exercises can flatten your belly without a single crunch.

Why Cutting Calories Won’t Help You Lose Weight, According to a Nutrition Expert

Why-Cutting-Calories-Won't-Help-You-Lose-Weight,-According-to-a-Nutrition-Expert_124151692_Pressmaster

So, you’re looking to shed a pound or two. Time to cut back on those pesky calories, right?

Not so fast. According to Michelle Adams-Arent, a sports nutrition consultant and the Director of Science and Education for Metabolic Precision, reducing your food intake might not work like you originally thought. (Forget about these 10 myths about fat, too.) In fact, it might actually backfire.

“Your body is built for survival,” Adams-Arent told Business Insider. “It doesn’t care what you want to look like.”

The minute you start cutting back on your caloric consumption, your body goes into full-on starvation mode. Translation? Your metabolic rate will actually decrease as your body tries to preserve what little nutrition it has. A lower metabolism means fewer calories burned. What’s more, research even shows burning more calories than you consume over a long period of time can increase your body fat. Not exactly the outcome you were hoping for. (You’re probably better off with these 42 fast, easy tips for weight loss, instead.)

As for the best way to burn body fat? Decrease your caloric consumption by only a small amount, which avoids a panicky response from your body, Adams-Arent says. She recommends consuming small meals throughout the day, making sure to include a serving of protein in every one. And make breakfast your largest meal; doing so will help you burn more calories for the rest of the day. This one breakfast, in particular, is said to boost your metabolism almost instantly.

Kicking up your exercise a notch will banish your body fat, too. Plus, sleep—both its quality and quantity—affects how many calories you burn in a 24 hour period, Adams-Arent said. Here’s how you can literally lose weight in your sleep. And if none of those options work for you, here are 12 more ways to jump-start your metabolism.

Need to see it in visuals? These 15 pictures prove that calorie-counting won’t always help you lose weight.

12 Sneaky Ways You Get Tricked into Overeating—and How to Fight Back

Labeling a meal as “healthy”

SaladThere are plenty of reasons why you overeat when you aren’t hungry. But how can being hungry and trying to make a healthier choice lead to accidental overeating?

When you eat something you think is healthy on the menu, chances are you’ll feel less guilty about eating it. And with less guilt surrounding a meal, you’re actually more likely to eat too much! Studies show that we consistently underestimate the calorie content of foods we think are healthy, and then overeat them because we feel like we’re making a great choice for our health.

How to fight back:

Always pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues, even when you’re eating healthy fare. Eat slowly and put your fork down after every few bites, and stop when you’re satisfied, not stuffed. These are the subtle things mindful eaters do at every meal to stay in control.

If you’re choosing between the spaghetti and meatballs that you’ll really enjoy and the spinach salad that you won’t feel guilty about, occasionally opt for the pasta, eat it with appreciation, and stop when you’re satisfied. You’ll likely end up eating fewer calories than you would if you’d scarfed down a bucket of salad—probably with fattening extras like croutons or cheese or candied nuts.
