I Never Struggled with Body Image—Until I Lost 36 Pounds

I can’t say that my body was perfect—in fact, it was far from it. But, I dressed in a way that made me feel good and polished. I carried myself with confidence. I was recently dating again and had no problems attracting men. I was active and worked out regularly, but by no means was I thin. I just felt OK with my body being where it was, that is until my life changed. Here are more life-changing stories and weight loss tips from people who have lost 50 or more pounds.

Inspired by the man I was dating, I decided to try to drop a few pounds. (This part is hard for me to admit because I never thought I would be “that girl.”) Not because he was a fitness guru who worked out religiously, or ate healthy, or even said anything to me about losing weight. (He always told me how sexy and beautiful I was.) I fell in love and, simply, I wanted to be a better person physically, emotionally, and financially because his love motivated me to grow in those ways.

So, I tried a round of Whole30 and lost almost 14 pounds. Then I did another. And another. For the most part, I still eat Whole30 compliant even when I’m not in a cycle with the exception of special circumstances. Down a total of 36 pounds since July 2017, I should be prancing around in clothes I always wanted to wear but never felt quite comfortable in, and glowing all the time because the compliment shower has not stopped.

Wrong.

I am actually having a harder time with my body image now than I ever had in my life.

I have lost weight before and I have gained it all back and then some. I stayed consistent for some years, but then there would be a large gain or loss. Then it would come back again. Sometimes it was conscious. Sometimes it wasn’t. However, with three rounds of the Whole30 behind me, I have completely changed my life and eating habits. But, to be honest there are some very real factors holding me back from celebrating.

First is the fear of gaining the weight back. I just feel like this would be a huge blow to my self-esteem. Yes, I know how to get back to the weight I am now, but the thought of letting myself down for a few indulgences kills me. Here are 50 ways to lose weight naturally without cutting out all your favorite foods.

Second, dating again is holding me back as well. (Sadly, the man, who still means the world to me, isn’t in my life anymore.) While I had no problem attracting men before, the pool was smaller for me. Now, I feel like more men will be attracted to my body, making it harder to find someone who admires me for being a smart, accomplished individual, instead of just a hot chick.

I am trying, though, to battle my self-esteem the best I know how. I weigh myself daily to hold myself accountable. I stay active, running regularly and attending SoulCycle classes two or three times a week. However, I have also started focusing on other things about my body. I pay attention to how strong I have gotten. Or how much more endurance I have as I climb stairs or run with my dog. I started tucking my shirts in and wearing things a bit more fitted. I also take photographs once a week to examine progress made beyond the scale. And, of course, I’m still a pretty cool chick on the inside, too.

I’m not really sure when I will be OK with being where I am. I’m not sure when I will be able to fully accept my “new” body. But I’m going to keep focusing on the positive until I wake up one day and don’t even think about my body at all. I Lost 100 Pounds on the Keto Diet—and Cured My Fatty Liver Disease

Overweight since college, 52-year-old Christine Trimpe of Berkley, Michigan, had tried everything to get her weight under control. Weight Watchers, the South Beach diet, even a medical weight loss program that limited her to 800 calories a day—nothing worked for Trimpe long-term. Right around the time her health and hope had reached their lowest points, Trimpe discovered a solution that ended up saving her life—and she wants to share it with the world.

As her weight kept creeping up, Trimpe’s health was in steep decline. She was battling extreme fatigue, brain fog, knee pain, and swollen hands; eventually, depression set in. “I spent a lot of time laying on the couch, napping, or avoiding life,” Trimpe said. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (she stopped breathing numerous times during the night) and she started experiencing severe menstrual cramping.

Her gynecologist ordered pelvic and abdominal ultrasounds. While the scans revealed that Trimpe had ovarian cysts, her doctor diagnosed her with something even more serious: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition in which fat accumulates on the liver. It’s the most common type of liver disease, and about a third of Americans have it, according to the National Insitute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and it’s on the rise.

“The numbers have absolutely skyrocketed,” says Jason Fung, MD, a nephrologist in Toronto. “If you look at the causes of liver failure, it’s actually becoming one of the top causes in North America.” Doctors can use blood tests, imaging tests, or a liver biopsy to diagnose NAFLD, but because it doesn’t have obvious symptoms, it’s often caught late when the liver has already suffered lasting damage—that’s why it’s known as a silent killer. Left untreated, NAFLD can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver failure; a liver transplant may be necessary, reports the NIDDK. Keep an eye out for these 9 fatty liver symptoms.

Being obese or having type 2 diabetes raises your risk—between 70 and 90 percent of people with these conditions have NAFLD. Eating a diet loaded with sugar and refined carbohydrates seems to aggravate NAFLD, says Dr. Fung. The body transports excess blood sugar to the liver where it’s turned into fat—and it can accumulate on the organ. Dietary fat, on the other hand, is put to use or stored with other fat cells, he explains.

When Trimpe started to do her own research, she became intrigued by the ketogenic diet—an extremely low-carb approach that forces the body to burn fat instead of sugar for energy. Some experts are wary of the eating plan, but early research suggests it could help people like Trimpe: A small study published in the journal Cell Metabolism suggests swapping carbs for protein can reduce fat in the liver within two weeks—regardless of how many calories a person eats or how much weight they lose. “The proof is going to take some time,” says Dr. Fung, “but on the other hand, a simple intervention like cutting down on sugar is something everyone can agree on.” Here are 9 easy habits that can reduce your risk for liver disease.

Trimpe decided to dive in: Using the apps like LoseIt and Carb Manager to track her food, she followed a plan that was 5 percent carbohydrates, 20-25 percent proteins, and 70 to 75 percent healthy fats; she was eating fewer than 20 grams of carbohydrates a day (the equivalent of five teaspoons of sugar).

Making sure her food sources were clean, Trimpe filled her plate with eggs, grass-fed beef and chicken, and healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter. She says she couldn’t believe how full she felt on the plan—suddenly, she could go for hours without thinking about food. Within the first month alone, she lost 13 pounds.

“When the weight started melting off—pretty much almost immediately—I knew this was the lifestyle that was going to work for me,” Trimpe says. Within a year, she had lost 100 pounds, her symptoms had cleared up, and she had much more energy. When she returned for a follow-up ultrasound, her ovarian cysts were gone and she no longer had fatty liver disease.

With a new lease on life, Trimpe hopes to inspire others struggling with obesity and chronic health conditions. “I’m really determined to make the best of this gift that God has given me to go forward with this lifestyle and teach people what I can,” she said. This Is Why You Should Never Order a Soda with a Burger

A burger and soda go together like peanut butter and jelly, but you might want to reach for water with your next meaty meal. You’re probably well aware that sugary drinks aren’t good for you, but we’re not here to talk about those extra calories. Sugary drinks could affect your waistline way beyond what the nutrition label would tell you—and they’ll do even more damage if you pair them with the wrong food. This is what happens to your body one hour after drinking a can of soda.

Protein-packed meals mean you’re eating foods that help build muscle, which is great! But if you pair them with a sugary drink, you could do more harm than good.

Researchers had 27 adults eat four meals: Two had 15 percent protein—one with a sugar-sweetened beverage and the other with a sugar-free drink; the other two were 30 percent protein with the same drink pairings.

Drinking a sugary beverage with a meal led to lower fat oxidation, the process that starts breaking down fat in the body, according to the study in the journal BMC Nutrition. And the higher-protein meal had an even bigger decrease than the one with less protein. Basically, drinking a sugary beverage with a protein-heavy meal means you’ll burn less fat, unlike these foods that help you burn fat.

Participants actually did burn more calories after drinking the sugary drink than the one without sugar. But that metabolism boost wasn’t big enough to negate the calories in the drink.

In fact, a sugary drink could mean more calories even after your cup is empty. The extra calories didn’t do anything to help participants’ hunger—in fact, they led to bigger cravings later on. Getting plenty of protein without the extra sugar cut down on cravings for salty, savory foods. But when the high-protein meal came with a sugary beverage, the appetite for those foods came back.

“Our findings suggest that having a sugar-sweetened drink with a meal impacts both sides of the energy balance equation,” says lead study author Shanon Casperson, PhD, research biologist with USDA, in a statement. “On the intake side, the additional energy from the drink did not make people feel more sated. On the expenditure side, the additional calories were not expended and fat oxidation was reduced.”

So even though protein is good for you, pairing it with sugar could let those benefits slip away. If you’re starting a day with protein-heavy eggs, don’t make the healthy breakfast mistake of drinking sugary juice; stick with coffee instead.
